Mitochondrial health could be the critical factor and the key to increased energy levels, higher resilience, resistance to disease, increased longevity and better mental health! 💥
Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles found in the cells of living organisms, including humans.
Often referred to as the "powerhouses of the cell," mitochondria play a critical role in energy production, metabolism, and various cellular functions, and they are also closely linked to both our mental and physical health.
Two key factors that are critical in the abundance of our mitochondria and how resilient and healthy they are:
1. TOTAL BODY STRESS LOAD - this includes everything from psychological and emotional stress, to toxins and pollutants in the environment, to poor diet, sleep deprivation, poor gut health and so on.
2. THE BODY'S RESILIENT SYSTEMS - the body’s capacity to handle stressors.
Resistance to stress parallels the health of your mitochondria 💪
And the health of your mitochondria predicts:
→ Your resistance to disease
→ Your longevity
→ Your resilience
→ Your energy levels
In terms of our PHYSICAL HEALTH mitochondria play critical roles in:
🚀 Energy Production
🚀 Metabolism Regulation
🚀 Muscle Function
🚀 Cellular Repair and Maintenance
And in terms of our MENTAL HEALTH mitochondria play critical roles in:
⚡️Neurotransmitter Synthesis
⚡️Brain Energy Demand
⚡️Neuroprotection
⚡️Neuroplasticity
? So what are the proven scientific methods that can help improve mitochondrial health and function?
🏋🏿♂️ Regular Exercise ➡️ Hormetic stressor
❄️ Cold Exposure ➡️ Hormetic stressor
🍴 Intermittent Fasting and Caloric Restriction ➡️ Hormetic stressor
🍎 Balanced Diet
🌰 Healthy Fats and Nutrients
🧘🏼♂️Stress Management
🛌 Adequate Sleep
🚭 Avoid Toxins
💧 Hydration
🚶🏾♀️Regular Physical Activity
Hormesis - refers to intermittent bursts of certain stressors (hormetic stressors) that trigger a cascade of cellular processes that enhance overall health, slow aging, increase energy levels, and make you more resilient to future stress (physical and mental).
Once we start to understand how these lifestyle factors and hormetic stressors are intricately connected to the building blocks of our cellular health, energy, resilience and resistance to disease; we can start to implement them with more intention, and increase our awareness of their effects on our health and wellbeing in the process.
Wishing you all healthy and abundant mitochondria! 🚀
